Depression Q&A

What causes depression?

There's no single cause of depression. It can occur for many reasons and has a variety of triggers. For some people, a stressful or upsetting life event, such as divorce, illness, bereavement, redundancy, and job or money worries, can be the cause.

Abuse, conflict, grief, and a combination of various causes can also trigger depression.

What effects might depression have on me?

Depression affects people differently depending on their psychological makeup, events they experienced, and what help they received afterward. For example, losing a child can trigger major depressive disorder (MDD) or depression.

It can appear at any age, and the symptoms can vary from person to person.

For many who have depression, the symptoms are usually severe enough to negatively impact their day-to-day life, but this isn’t always the case.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Symptoms indicating you have depression include:

  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Social withdrawal
  • A decline in school or work performance
  • Lost appetite or binge-eating
  • Loss of interest in things you enjoy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Trouble sleeping or excessive sleeping
  • Suicidal thoughts or tendencies

Some people start drinking heavily or using illegal drugs to numb their emotions. Help is available. If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help immediately. Call 911 for emergency services or go to the nearest hospital.
